The Creative Space: Sam Pettersen, Designer at Orangebox

This month we are looking into the material concrete and therefor our Creative Space feature this month will focus on this material also and spaces that use this material in inspiring ways. 

We kick things off with Sam Pettersen, a designer from Orangebox who spotted a building in London to this affect and has told us why he found it so inspiring.So Sam, where is your creative space?

As a designer I am inspired by the honesty of brutalist architecture which celebrates the structural efficiency of concrete through bold sculptural and geometric forms. Having spent my childhood growing up in post-war Coventry I have a huge affection for these sometimes-neglected buildings. A building which inspires me is the Neave Brown designed Alexandra Road estate. I greatly admire the ideology of this clean-lined concrete complex which was conceived out of optimism for a brighter future.Taking inspiration from brutalist architecture, my latest range of Cubb tables embodies the ethos that great design comes from making the complex simple. Throughout the development I investigated and challenged the materials and processes in order to create a design which celebrates the inherent qualities of the materials.
