What if the most luxurious spaces are the ones that never need to raise their voice?

In his latest monthly column for Design Insider, Ed Murray explores the growing power of quiet luxury in hospitality design, and why understatement is leaving a deeper impression than spectacle.

From tactile materials and softened acoustics to lighting that reveals rather than performs, this is a thoughtful reflection on the kinds of spaces guests truly want to spend time in.

“True luxury does not announce itself. It waits to be discovered.”
Ed Murray, Partner at Studio Moren

Humanscale has opened its new San Francisco showroom, designed in collaboration with Suchi Reddy, a space that rethinks how performance-driven products are experienced.

Blending retail and workplace, the showroom is intentionally calm, intuitive and adaptable. Curved forms, modular layouts and layered zones allow visitors to experience how design supports movement, comfort and focus throughout the day.

Sustainability is embedded throughout, from preserving existing materials to collaborating with local innovators, while a female-led design and delivery team sets a clear precedent for more inclusive ways of working.

More than a showroom, it’s a reflection of how design can support both wellbeing and community.

For years the conversation around workplace design focused on new buildings.

But something interesting is happening.

Many of the most ambitious workplace projects now involve reinventing what already exists.

Historic offices are being retrofitted.
Underperforming spaces are being reprogrammed.
And designers are rethinking how every square metre functions.

At 170 Piccadilly, dMFK has introduced a premium workplace within a Grade II listed building.

At 5 New Street Square, Bennetts Associates has delivered a low-carbon retrofit that dramatically improves environmental performance.

In Manchester, SpaceInvader’s new Virgin Media O2 office shows how workplace design is increasingly shaped around culture, collaboration and identity.

Together these projects suggest a shift in workplace thinking: the future office may be less about building new space and more about transforming the space we already have.
