Jim Biddulph reports from this year’s Surface Design Show and one theme stood out above all others: circularity.

From eggshell and oyster-shell composites to denim boards, plastic-note panels and cork reimagined at architectural scale, the aisles at the Islington Business Design Centre revealed a material culture shifting decisively towards reuse, regeneration and recovery.

As Jim explores, circular production is no longer a sidebar to innovation, it is shaping the aesthetic, technical and ethical direction of surface design.

Plans have been approved by Dacorum Borough Council for a carefully designed programme of improvements to the Grade II-listed country house hotel, set within 35 acres of historic parkland on the edge of the Chilterns National Landscape.

Designed by Studio Moren, the scheme replaces temporary structures with permanent, high-quality buildings, introduces sensitively designed new guest accommodation and enhances events and leisure facilities, all while safeguarding the manor’s architectural and landscape significance.

As Herbert Lui, Partner at Studio Moren, explains:

“Our ambition from the outset has been to work with that inheritance rather than compete with it.”

A significant new addition to London’s student living offer.

Robeson House, a £100 million purpose-built scheme for the London School of Economics and Political Science, delivers 676 bedrooms within a carefully considered 16-storey development in South London.

Designed by Willmore Iles Architects, with interior architecture and brand strategy by Jasper Sanders + Partners, the project rethinks postgraduate living, balancing study, wellbeing and operational clarity within a cohesive, highly legible environment.

As Jasper Sanders notes: “The reconfiguration focused on establishing clear zoning, intuitive circulation, and legible destinations… delivering a welcoming and calm resident experience.”

Named after Eslanda Robeson, the scheme weaves cultural narrative into its architecture, from ‘The Street’ social spine to rooftop terraces overlooking Burgess Park.
