A major new workplace has landed in Manchester.⁠
⁠
SpaceInvader has completed a nearly 50,000 sq ft office interior for Virgin Media O2, spanning five floors of the net-zero Island building in the city’s central business district.⁠
⁠
Designed around the culture, energy and identity of Manchester, the workspace combines high-performance environments with wellbeing-led design, supporting everything from contact centre operations to corporate teams and social collaboration.⁠
⁠
Highlights include:⁠
⁠
• 50,000 sq ft across five floors within the Island development⁠
• Floors inspired by Manchester culture — sport, science & industry, pop culture and music⁠
• A continuous “Ribbon of Oxygen” biophilic feature woven through the workspace⁠
• A new landmark staircase and social hub connecting teams vertically⁠
• Spaces designed for hybrid work, wellbeing and neurodiversity⁠
• Targeting BREEAM Outstanding and WELL Platinum⁠
⁠

Candid conversations like this matter because progress in commercial interiors is rarely abstract. It shows up in who gets trusted with responsibility, who gets credited, and how clearly pathways to leadership are built.⁠

Design Insider spoke with Tatiana Sheveleva (CHAPI DESIGN INC.), Kate Mooney (OCCA), Ana Moisin Bucătaru (Anamo Design Studio) and Rachel Trippier (f.r.a.), exploring what practical contribution looks like in studios today, and where change still needs to be made.⁠

A recurring theme was access: opening up the full spectrum of practice to emerging designers, not just the “safe” parts. ⁠
⁠
As Ana Moisin shared: “Giving means opening the full spectrum of practice to emerging designers… from concept and storytelling through technical detailing, procurement, and site delivery.”⁠
⁠
That commitment to visibility and real responsibility was echoed by Kate Mooney, who spoke about offering “a seat at the table… exposure to clients… ownership of a budget… space to make decisions and learn.”⁠
⁠
For Rachel Trippier, building stronger pathways comes down to “flexibility, clarity and respect”, with transparent progression, mentorship, and opportunities to lead visible projects, so ambition is supported rather than quietly tested.⁠
⁠
And Tatiana Sheveleva widened the lens to the everyday habits that shape culture: mentoring, inclusive hiring, crediting contributors, and senior women actively sponsoring emerging talent to break closed networks and strengthen the work.⁠
⁠
This is a conversation about the realities of practice now, and what the sector can commit to next, through systems that make opportunity visible, measurable and shared.⁠
