Led interior designer and Owner of CHAPI Design, Tatiana Sheveleva, the interiors reinterpret Key Biscayne’s natural beauty and layered past through a contemporary coastal lens, balancing elegance, calm and architectural clarity.

CHAPI Design is an interior architecture and design studio founded by Tatiana Sheveleva, known for crafting emotionally resonant spaces rooted in culture, narrative and place. With a deep commitment to contextual luxury, the studio specialises in high-end hospitality, branded residences, luxury yachts and bespoke private projects globally.

Set between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay, the design scheme is crafted to feel both intimate and expansive. Each room is conceived not simply as a place to stay, but as a personal retreat shaped by light, texture and memory.

“We choreographed little love letters to the island,” says Tatiana. “Every texture, tone and curve is meant to echo Key Biscayne’s quiet glamour – inviting guests to step inside and feel as if the coastline followed them home.”

A sanctuary shaped by history and landscape

CHAPI Design’s concept draws inspiration from Key Biscayne’s earliest identity as a place of refuge – a protected harbour, a pirate hideaway, and later, an abundant agricultural enclave.

This sense of seclusion and shelter informs the guestrooms’ hushed palette: enveloping sands, sun-bleached woods, soft neutrals and misty coastal tones that frame uninterrupted ocean or garden views through floor-to-ceiling windows. Private terraces extend the experience outdoors, blurring the line between interior calm and island atmosphere.

Tatiana explains:

“We wanted guests to feel as though they’ve arrived somewhere quietly known only to them. A modern echo of the island’s earliest role as a place of arrival, recovery and rest.”

Layered into this serene foundation are tactile references to the island’s orchard past – once the largest coconut exporter in the United States. Subtle botanical influences emerge through woven textures, pale greens, warm ambers and organic silhouettes.

Rounded furnishings, handcrafted finishes and softened edges recall tools and vessels of agrarian life, grounding the contemporary experience in the richness of the land.

Reef-inspired materials and coastal lightness

Just offshore, one of the last living coral reefs in the continental United States provided a powerful conceptual muse. Throughout the rooms and residences, stone surfaces with expressive veining reference underwater currents, and sculptural lighting recalls the branching forms of elkhorn coral. In the branded residences, this reef-inspired narrative deepens into a more residential expression – luxurious yet muted, immersive yet restrained.

A custom-designed glass sconce becomes a signature element across bedrooms, suites and residences. Its fluid, undulating form mirrors the island’s barrier shoal geography – translucent, luminous and in constant dialogue with light. Positioned beside intricately carved wood headboards etched with wave-like patterns, the handblown sconce by Lasvit create a poetic interplay between solidity and fluidity, land and sea.

This sense of buoyancy continues through airy drapery that moves like dune grass, soft gradients that recall shoreline transitions, and sculpted forms inspired by the protective networks of mangrove roots – a homage to Key Biscayne’s role as a natural shield for the mainland.

Cosmopolitan ease, quietly expressed

Reflecting the island’s unique social character – at once relaxed and internationally sophisticated – CHAPI Design weaves subtle Latin American influences into custom textiles, curated art and refined pattern work. References to the island’s storied tennis heritage appear in precise linear detailing and tailored upholstery, offering knowing nods rather than overt gestures.

The result is an interior collection that feels elevated yet effortless, richly layered yet intentionally restrained – a sanctuary where indulgence is measured in calm, space and atmosphere rather than excess.

In its entirety, the redesigned guestrooms, suites and branded residences at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne form a cohesive interior tapestry – where history, geography and modern luxury converge. Through CHAPI Design’s narrative-driven approach, the island’s past is reinterpreted as a living, breathing present – beautifully, quietly and enduringly so.
