Timorous Beasties Unveils ‘Straight Out the Jungle’: An Anachronistic Tropical Escape

The internationally renowned Scottish design brand Timorous Beasties, celebrating 35 years of their bold, boundary-pushing wallpapers and fabrics, today announces the launch of its exotic new collection, ‘Straight Out the Jungle’.

Rooted in a spirit of elegant irreverence, this collection presents a richly decorative and innovative new range of wallpapers and fabrics. It is a collection of anachronistic, tropical-inspired designs, loosely based on the 17th Century inspirational book ‘The Insects of Surinam’ by the Dutch naturalist Maria Sybillia Merian.

Celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, Timorous Beasties is a specialist, multi-disciplinary studio headquartered in Glasgow, founded by Alistair McAuley and Paul Simmons in 1990. Offering a portfolio of well over 500 original designs, the brand focuses on hand and digitally printed fabric and wallpaper designed in-house by Paul and Alistair and then made in the UK to the very highest standards.

Nature, Intensified and Unprecedented

In ‘Straight Out the Jungle,’ the imagery is immediately recognisable as classic TB, where time and attention have been meticulously spent on the hand drawn detail. The nature is gargantuan; a dense, supernatural jungle where insects, lizards, and caterpillars leap, fly, and chew on large leaves and flowers. This intensity is a deliberate move away from the more sweet and traditional ways of representing nature frequently in patterned design.

The collection’s hero is XL Jungle, a show-stopping wallpaper design spanning an exceptional and unorthodox 20M repeat. This innovative scale is unprecedented in the world of wallpaper and fabric. The imagery changes over the entire 20M, and crucially, because there is no side-to-side repeat, there is no wastage—the wallpaper can be continuously applied to any wall.

Both the XL Jungle and the accompanying six panel designs are digitally printed with opaque ink onto a silver metallic robust embossed vinyl base, and a finely textured non-woven paper. This process gives the designs the characteristics of the zinc metallic plate often used in engraved work, fusing modern capabilities with an appreciation for age-old traditions.

The Panels offer a totally unique twist: they all share the same side-to-side repeat but contain varying imagery running down the centre. This innovation allows the panels to be cleverly mixed and matched in any order, while ensuring each is individually different.

The range is completed by the smaller, all-over repeat designs, Florama, Vinea and Leaforia. These are three much smaller designs with details drawn directly from elements of the main collection. These wallpapers provide accessible all-over repeats and are available in three colours of each.

Reworked classic and Robust Fabrics

The collection also introduces Indie Jungle, a tropical version of the TB classic, ‘Indie Wood’. With a 10M repeat and printed onto a simple but luxuriously tactile matt paper, this design is sold as a standard 10M, 52cm width roll, making it easy to use in any residential setting. It is available in six different colourways.

Indie Jungle is also the star of the fabrics in the collection– a dramatic statement scaled to over twice its original size and featuring a 26M repeat —an unprecedented and unique vision. This intricate design works in any orientation, adding to its non-directional versatility.

The fabric range also includes:

  • Florama: Fabric available in two colours
  • Leaforia: Fabric available in two colours

These fabrics are engineered for longevity, so as well as drapery use, they are designed to handle the demands of upholstery. The all-over nature of the designs, combined with their non-directional pattern, allows for the chance to create truly one-off bespoke pieces of furniture, works of art in themselves.

Straight Out the Jungle also has a range of coordinates including Lampshades, Cushions and Shopper Bags.

A Radical Approach to Pattern

The ‘Straight Out the Jungle’ collection is a vivid example of Timorous Beasties’ radical approach to pattern, taking the delicate observations of a 17th-century naturalist and transforming them into a boundary-pushing, gargantuan vision for the modern interior.

From the unprecedented 20M repeat of the XL Jungle wallpaper to the robust, non-directional upholstery fabrics, this collection redefines the scale and intensity with which nature can adorn a space. It is a complete immersion into a jungle fantasy—Timorous Beasties, distinctly Timorous, and without compromise.
