Biophilic Design and Wellbeing: BAGNODESIGN’s Nature-Led Approach to Commercial Bathrooms

Biophilic design is shaping how we specify commercial bathrooms. In her own words Katy Olsen, Brand Manager at BAGNODESIGN, explores how nature-led interiors can transform wellbeing-driven spaces.

Inspired by traditional Japanese bathing, the Nara collection brings serene minimalism and tactile warmth to contemporary bathrooms.

‘Wellness continues to drive innovation across interior design, and nowhere is this more evident than in the commercial bathroom space. From boutique hotels to high-end spa resorts, spaces designed to enhance relaxation and wellbeing are in demand and at the heart of many of these designs is biophilia.

Put simply, biophilic design is about nurturing our connection to nature. As a design philosophy, it’s rooted in the belief that natural materials, textures and forms can support mental and physical wellbeing. And as commercial interiors become more experience-led, the influence of biophilia is being felt across all areas, including bathroom design.

From macro to micro

Often associated with lifestyle trends such as hygge or Japandi, biophilic design falls under the broader wellness umbrella, a macro trend that continues to evolve in both the residential and commercial space. The modern consumer is increasingly seeking out moments of calm in a busy world, and the bathroom is often the one place where time slows down.

For hospitality designers and specifiers, creating this sense of calm is about much more than layout or lighting; it’s about the emotional experience of the space. Materials that mimic natural forms, finishes that feel organic and colour palettes drawn from land and sea can all play a role in creating environments that feel soothing and grounded.

Design that feels personal

As this trend evolves, we’ve also seen growing demand for personalisation, an important factor in today’s experience-led market. At BAGNODESIGN, we’ve responded to this shift with collections that embrace both nature-inspired design and flexibility. Ranges such as Orology, Bristol, Alpine and Beach House bring together organic textures, stone-effect surfaces and fluted detailing, all presented in a consistent, natural colour palette. The ability to mix and match elements across these ranges gives designers more freedom to curate spaces that feel personal and thoughtfully considered.

A prime example is the Chiasso mixer range, which includes 48 variations designed to complement our Alpine Basins and Countertop Collection.

Washed wood textures and fluid lines define the Beach House collection, evoking the easy elegance of coastal living.

Bathroom design, reimagined

Collections like Nara from BAGNODESIGN reflect this natural sensibility perfectly. Inspired by the timeless beauty of Japanese craftsmanship, Nara pairs warm wood tones with minimalist forms to create spaces that feel calming and serene. The collection includes vanities, shelving and framed mirrors crafted from solid Ash, offering a tactile connection to nature that aligns beautifully with biophilic principles.

This connection is echoed in Beach House, a relaxed, coastal-inspired range that combines washed wood textures with soft, fluid lines. Designed to evoke the ease of coastal living, Beach House taps into the softer side of biophilic design, creating bathrooms that feel light, open and effortlessly peaceful.

Both collections are available in calming, nature-led tones and can be paired with brassware in muted, earthy finishes such as Brushed Nickel or Soft Bronze to complete the look.

Nature-led tones and soft curves make Beach House a perfect choice for light, open and effortlessly peaceful spaces.

Wellness in commercial spaces

For commercial projects, the beauty of biophilic design is not just aesthetic, it also enhances usability and guest experience. A bathroom that evokes a sense of calm can elevate a stay, turn a visit into an experience and align with a brand’s wider wellbeing ethos.

That’s why at BAGNODESIGN, our product development always considers not just how a piece looks, but how it makes people feel. Whether it’s a warm woodgrain, a tactile surface or a spa-inspired silhouette, every element is designed to support the emotional connection between the user and the space.

A lasting impression

With wellbeing firmly embedded in the future of commercial design, biophilic principles will continue to influence how we specify bathrooms. As consumers seek to reconnect with nature, even in the most urban of environments, the demand for interiors that soothe, restore and inspire is only set to grow.

Collections like Nara and Beach House reflect this mood perfectly, offering a thoughtful balance of form, function and feeling. They’re designed to make spaces feel better, as well as to look beautiful.’
