That’s the starting point for Sophia Gravina, whose work sits at the intersection of inclusive design, research and digital tools.⁠
⁠
After working in aged healthcare in New Zealand, Sophia saw first-hand how design can either support or undermine dignity. It’s what led her to found Spira Design and most recently launch a new Visual Contrast tool that helps designers assess schemes against UK regulations in real time.⁠
⁠
As she puts it:⁠
⁠
“If a user has to ask for directions because signage is unclear, or if they struggle to stand up because a chair is unsuitable, they lose a bit of independence. My role is to use thoughtful design to give that dignity back.”⁠
⁠
It’s a reminder that inclusive design isn’t niche, it’s fundamental.⁠
⁠

2025 marked a major milestone for the business, with rapid growth in its commercial division, expansion into international markets, and projects delivered across more than 30 cruise vessels worldwide.⁠

But what’s driving that momentum?⁠

It comes down to a clear model, investment in in-house manufacturing, a vertically integrated approach, and the ability to deliver complex projects globally, without losing the agility of a family-run business.⁠
