Q&A with Paul Williams at Evans Textiles

Evans Textiles, a member of BCFA, recently spoke with us in regards to their new cellular blinds in the Nuance collection. We were interested in how the blinds were child safe, as well as the other features it boasted. We were kindly allowed a short Q&A with Paul Williams, Track & Blind Systems Divisional Director at Evans Textiles with over 15 years industry experience, to answer some of our questions.

Answers from Evans Textiles’ Divisional Director, Paul Williams

Please tell us about your company.

Evans Textiles is a leading supplier of soft furnishings and curtain & blind hardware. Established in 1897, we’ve got over 100 years’ industry experience and we’re renowned throughout the industry for being at the forefront of innovation. A prime example of this is our exclusive revolutionary DB1 curtain lining – which we firmly believe is the best lining available on the market.

One thing that often surprises many of our customers is our wide range of products that offer high quality at a very competitive price. Customers can source everything they need under one roof from versatile everyday items such as a range of fabrics, curtain linings, cushions, and curtain poles to the more technologically advanced systems such as our range of motorised blinds and curtain tracks.

What is the most interesting fact about your company?

Just a quick glance at our past highlights and some of our innovations: in the 1940’s, our blackout linings were used to shield people from air raids in the Blitz by blocking out the light. In 1953, we were appointed to provide the highest specification down proof for the sleeping bag of  Sir Edmund Hilary in his conquest of mount Everest. In more recent years we’ve taken control of our supply lines ensuring many of our products are finished in the UK to the highest quality possible.

Can you talk us through your new cellular blinds and the ways that these are child safe design? Why is this so important?

Our new cellular blinds comply with industry regulations for child safety. It can often be overlooked, but child safety with blinds is extremely important as in the past, blind cords have been a ‘silent-killer’ whereby young children have become entangled. The cordless operating features and child-safe mechanisms we provide help prevent injuries and make them ideal for homes and public spaces.

What are the differences between the options of corded, spring-loaded and motorised?

Corded, spring-loaded and motorised are all operating options for our cellular blinds. More specifically, corded are chain-operated blinds which raise ‘up’ and lower ‘down’ as needed via a side mounted chain system– very much in the conventional way. Spring-loaded have no external cords, allowing the users to simply lift the blind system by hand to the position they require. Our motorised options really incorporate 21st century technology. With a touch of a button, you can position the blinds to the exact position you require. There’s also the ability to have automatic timers and voice activation which really create window dressings for the ‘smart home’ of the future.

How did you decide on the material and colour palette for this collection?

We have a dedicated and talented team of designers at Evans and they coordinate the contemporary and ‘on-trend’ colour schemes. We have a total of 9 colour options available for the cellular blinds so there’s a real choice. In terms of materials, the headrail structure is made from high-grade aluminium  which is both robust and light and our blind fabric is produced using our leading blackout and dimout which are proven in terms of quality.

What is your favourite feature of the product? Why?

I simply love the way the product looks once installed. It’s non-obtrusive, modern and stylish. As each product is made to measure to specific requirements, so we can fit the blinds into the most unusual windows meaning no matter the interior, our blinds will help create the right ambience.
