How should design respond to landscapes of this scale and significance?⁠
⁠
At The Gígur Visitor Centre in Iceland, Nissen Richards Studio, working with SP(R)INT STUDIO, has created a permanent exhibition that sits in constant dialogue with its surroundings.⁠
⁠
Set within the extraordinary landscape of Lake Mývatn, the project moves beyond traditional visitor centre design. Instead of competing with panoramic views, the interior works with them, extending the experience of the natural environment.⁠
⁠
What’s particularly compelling is the balance: scientific insight is made accessible, play sits alongside education and the design remains deliberately restrained, allowing the landscape to lead.⁠
⁠
The result is a visitor centre that feels less like a contained exhibition and more like part of the terrain itself, a place where architecture, storytelling and environment are intrinsically connected.⁠

There’s been a long-standing tension in design between heritage and innovation, as if the two sit on opposite ends of the spectrum.⁠

But across the projects and products we’ve been covering, I`ve noticed it`s starting to change... ⁠
⁠
Some of the most compelling work right now isn’t choosing between craft or technology, it’s combining them. Traditional manufacturing knowledge is being reworked through digital tools. ⁠
⁠
Natural materials are being engineered for modern performance. ⁠
⁠
And sustainability is no longer an add-on, but built into how products are made from the very beginning.⁠
⁠
It feels less like a shift in style, and more like a shift in mindset.⁠
