UK MADE: Silentnight

Delivering a great night’s sleep to the nation, powered by renewable energy…

The Silentnight Group factory is based in the heart of Lancashire and produces over 800,000 mattresses each year. Silentnight Group ensures that the environment is front of mind in everything they do and that sustainability is a key part of the strategy, from operations and transport through to the products that Silentnight Group sell from their base in the UK. Not only is the factory solely powered by renewable energy, they have worked hard to identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption too, including launching a company-wide campaign to educate and encourage all employees to save energy.

As a carbon-neutral company, Silentnight Group work with Carbon Footprint Ltd to offset the 4,877 tCO2e of carbon generated by our business each year. The offsetting activity includes tree planting & renewable power projects in the UK, Africa & Asia. Not only are Silentnight Group proud of their carbon neutral status, but they are also actively reducing their carbon emissions too. In the past two years, Silentnight Group has reduced their footprint by 31.3% – with a 16.7% reduction in the past year.

And it doesn’t stop there. From Silentnight Group partnership with the Marine Conservation Society including cleaning up our beaches throughout the UK, to be a zero to landfill company, Silentnight Group also think about the environment when they are developing product too through the use of circular economy thinking.

“We took inspiration from the likes of Nike, Adidas and Patagonia and take single-use plastics and turn them into new products. We’re taking another industry’s waste product and converting it into new comfort fibres, therefore adding value by making new consumer goods.” Angela Moran, Product Strategy Director at Silentnight.

Silentnight saves over 450 million plastic bottles each year from entering our waste streams and oceans by incorporating single-use plastics into our mattresses, pillows, duvets and mattress protectors. Made from single-use plastic bottles our eco comfort fibres are extremely soft and breathable, meaning heat and moisture is able to escape, providing a refreshing night’s sleep.

By incorporating Silentnight Group’s eco comfort fibres into new product development for the Hospitality Industry, Silentnight Group aims to continue and enhance its sustainability efforts to protect the world’s oceans. Whether that be through sustainable product options for the industry, logistics – such as taking away our packaging for recycling or by providing our mattress recycling service for your old beds.

Working with their mattress recycling partners, they also assist with removing old beds from businesses when Silentnight Group are delivering new ones. All of the mattresses that Silentnight Group recycle are deconstructed into the mattress components, none of the mattresses Silentnight Group takes back are recovered or cleaned and sold second hand – the components are recycled, repurposed or reused in other industries. None of the mattress components in Silentnight Group mattresses are sent to landfill.

Whether it’s the beaches of the UK or the world’s oceans, Silentnight Group will continue to ensure that our sustainability practices remain front of mind, thinking about our nation and our planet every step of the way.
