Designer’s Muse: Ed Ng and Terence Ngan, AB Concept

During Milan Design Week at Euroluce we caught up with Ed Ng & Terence Ngan of AB Concept on the Lasvit stand to discuss through the inspiration behind their latest collaboration FLUX.

“You need to find the right story, like a film director. You need to find the right story and then from there you can take it onward.”

What was the concept behind FLUX?

For FLUX, we started with a simple drawing of a lamp shade, how a little boy or girl would draw a simple table shape, we felt there must be something classic about this shape, something that we’re so familiar with. So, how can we design something that is so familiar into something new? That became the challenge.

So, how did you arrive at the outcome?

We want to design more with a perception. Some people will say they see a mountain, and others an ocean and so I think that’s actually something we try to create. We leave it to your interpretation. We try to mimic this kind of coastline of receding waves leaving the mount on the beach. There’s two layers surrounding the glass one is the gold and one is the platinum. They are actually running in opposite direction in organic way. So I think that’s how we managed to transform the story.
