“Turning 40 is very exciting for us, but it has also sparked moments of reflection and conversations about the great products we’ve made, all the challenges we’ve overcome, and the customers we’ve worked with over the years. If there’s an underlying theme, it’s that our success is down to our fantastic people. Their ideas, skills, endeavour and creativity have made Boss what it is today.” Brian Murray, Executive Chairman and Founder of Boss Design

FROM BIRMINGHAM TO BEIJING, LONDON TO LOS ANGELES

Establishing the company in 1983 Boss Design evolved into an international leader in contract furniture with a constant focus on superb quality, sustainability and refined comfort.

Boss – Delphi

Delphi, the first chair the company produced, has prophetically become a design classic and remains a customer favourite to this day.

Boss – Kruze

With diligently crafted upholstery, excellent use of materials and myriad custom options, the Kruze seating range was released in 2005 and has proven equally timeless, appearing in corporate boardrooms, television studios, five-star hotels and more.

“There’s a real synergy in the way our designers, upholsterers, joiners and machinists work together, pushing their skills and ideas, producing prototype after prototype, refining each design so that it doesn’t just meet customer needs but evokes a feeling of delight when people see, feel and sit in our furniture.” Mark Barrell, Design Director

CREATING DESTINATION SPACES

For four decades, Boss has pioneered a trend towards softening the workplace, creating furniture that combines a smooth, organic aesthetic with home-like comfort and superb build quality. This vision is shared via showrooms in London, Manchester, Chicago, Frankfurt and Dubai. Acquiring Lyndon Design in Cheltenham in 2010 and Jack Cartwright in High Point, North Carolina in 2015, Boss extended its portfolio, customer base and manufacturing capacity and gained a foothold in North America.

Boss – Clerkenwell Showroom

Alongside seating and tables, Boss produces focus booths and pods. Architectural interventions such as the Mews product line enable specifiers to define spaces in innovative ways while supporting functionality, productivity, ergonomics, wellbeing and sustainability.

“Refined comfort is in the Boss Design DNA, helping our customers attract people back to the office after working from home during lockdown. Designed in-house, our Amelia wingback chair is just one recent example. Enticing, sculpted, tactile – it invites you to sit back, breathe and decompress.” Brian Murray

To mark its 40th anniversary, Boss Design will soon be releasing the retrospective book In the Making, which looks at how the company’s ethos has shaped its success.
