Milliken Achieves ISO 50001:2018 in Energy Management

Leading carpet tile designer and manufacturer Milliken has achieved ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management Systems requirements for its two UK manufacturing sites which service markets in Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa. ISO 50001 requires a company to develop a management framework for more efficient use of energy. Targets and objectives are established to meet these requirements, using relevant data. The aim of the standard is to help organisations continually reduce their energy use, and therefore their energy costs and their greenhouse gas emissions.

“We’re very proud to have achieved ISO 50001 status for our energy management systems. Reducing energy use and cutting CO2 emissions follows our environmental policy of doing good,” explains Milliken’s Plant Manager James O’Brien. “Receiving this standard validates Milliken’s genuine and tangible commitment to saving the world’s resources at a time when this has never been more critical.”

ISO 50001 was originally released by ISO in June 2011 and is suitable for any organisation, whatever its size, sector or geographical location. The second edition, ISO 50001:2018 was released in August 2018. ISO 50001 made a major leap forward in ‘raising the bar’ by requiring an organisation to demonstrate that they have improved their energy performance. They will benefit from cost savings and make a significant contribution to environmental and climate protection, for example by the permanent reduction of CO2 emissions.

According to the International Organization for Standardization: “using energy efficiently helps organisations save money as well as helping to conserve resources and tackle climate change. How we face up to the world’s energy challenges will heavily influence the future we leave for our children. Developing and deploying technologies for new and renewable energy sources can take time, but organisations can achieve immediate benefits by improving the way they manage energy. Improved energy efficiency can cut costs, reserve resources and contribute to reducing global warming. The new ISO 500001 standard for energy management systems can help safeguard our future by making a positive difference in the here and now.”
