Commercial Interiors UK and Design Insider are delighted to announce Martha Brown of Sheffield Hallam University as the winner of the Next Generation Exceptional Student Award 2026, sponsored by Silentnight Contract.

Martha’s winning project, Common Ground, responded to a live brief for a social space within a contemporary later-living setting. Her concept reimagined the communal winter garden as an active, welcoming environment designed to reduce loneliness, support independence and encourage meaningful social connection.

The judges commented: “This project stood out for its confidence, clarity, and depth of thinking. The Common Ground concept was beautifully resolved, not just visually, but in how it supports wellbeing, independence, and social connection.”

As part of her prize, Martha will receive a two-week work placement with Jen Bernard Interiors & Bernard London, with Commercial Interiors UK supporting travel and accommodation expenses up to £1000.

Congratulations to Martha, Sheffield Hallam University and all students who took part in this year’s brief

In our latest Joyful Spaces feature, Jon Humphreys of Sheila Bird Studio shares why Maggie`s Centres at the Royal Oldham Hospital left such a lasting impression on him.

Designed by dRMM, the centre rethinks what a healthcare environment can feel like. Warm timber, soft light, thoughtful materials, scented gardens, and spaces designed around comfort and dignity create an atmosphere that feels calming, human, and carefully uplifting.

From oak door handles chosen with chemotherapy patients in mind, to a birch tree growing through the heart of the building, every detail has been considered with care.

As Jon beautifully reflects: “It’s the feeling that someone thought carefully about you before you arrived, and made a place accordingly.”
