In this latest edition of Hospitality Matters, Toni Black, CEO of House of Black, reflects on a question that has become something of an obsession: what makes a space feel right ten years after it opens?

Drawing on experience across hospitality projects, Toni explores why longevity is rarely about avoiding trends and more often about understanding a building, its context and the people who will use it before deciding what it needs.

A thoughtful perspective on design rigour, lasting relevance and creating spaces that people return to time and again.

When His Majesty The King visited the CARE Hub in Grimsby, he wasn’t just seeing a community support centre. He was seeing the impact that thoughtful design can have on people’s lives.

Created within a former derelict bank building, the CARE Hub has been transformed into a warm, welcoming environment where people can access support, rebuild confidence and find a sense of belonging.

During his visit, The King met members of the local community, CARE’s dedicated team, and the designers behind the project, including Sanderson Design Group, whose contribution helped shape a space built around dignity, comfort and human connection.

As CARE CEO Anne Bickerstaffe said: “Spaces speak to people before any conversation begins.”
