Gasholders, Kings Cross

The iconic gasholder guideframes have decorated the landscape at King’s Cross for over 150 years. Gasholder No.8 is the largest of these, and was built for the storage of town gas for Pancras Gasworks, the largest gas works in London. Gas was manufactured here using coal from the Imperial Gas, Light and Coke Company.

The Grade II listed structure was originally constructed in the 1850s and expanded in 1883.

The guideframe consists of 16 hollow cylindrical cast iron columns in two tiers and two levels of wrought iron riveted lattice girders. The distinctive 25 metre high circular guide frame has an internal diameter of over 35 metres. The gasworks remained in use until the late 20th Century before being decommissioned in 2000.

Battersea Power Station

The legendary landmark, framed by 6 million bricks and chimneys that touch the sky was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott’s and elevated what was a functional building into an Art Deco masterpiece.

For its new incarnation, architects from WilkinsonEyre approached the redevelopment of the Power Station with the requisite amount of care – paying homage to its history but infusing it with a 21st-century sensibility. Michaelis Boyd’s interiors resonate with this original, irrepressible character, striking the right balance between energy, calm and the building’s former life.

The new apartments features original brick and steelwork dating back to the 1930’s, as well as new floor to ceiling Crittall windows, art-deco inspired interiors and state-of-the-art appliances and technology.

EE Smith has been awarded the huge contract of completing 454 shower & bathroom interiors. With a variety of high spec sanitary-ware specifications in a range of finishes, it has put the teams extensive bathroom expertise to the ultimate test; EE Smith’s is pleased to say that so far it has been a success. In addition to their site team, they have some incredible subcontractors working for them, who have made a marvellous job of the tiling across the hundreds of rooms.

During EE Smiths’ time working on this iconic project, they were extremely proud to have been awarded ‘Contractor Of the Month’ among numerous other highly-sought after contractors. The teams exceptional level of Health & Safety lead by Ian Philips is what elevated them to a prestige level in this large scale project. The safety of their staff is always a core focus for us here at EES so to be awarded for our stringent processes is really encouraging.
