ONE: CLAIRE VALLIS
Continuing with our popular series, we invited Claire Vallis to take part in ONE, where you can glimpse the passions, interests and unexpected choices of the individuals behind the UK’s design and manufacturing sectors.
Claire Vallis is Creative Director of Brands at Style Library and is responsible for six of the most iconic British brands in home interiors; Zoffany, Morris & Co., Harlequin, Sanderson, Anthology and Scion. She studied surface print at Bucks College, joining Anstey as designer and soon running the whole studio. A champion of promoting new talent, one of her favourite times of the year is presenting awards at New Designers.
ONE Book: Madame Badobedah by Sophie Dahl
Madame Badobedah by Sophie Dahl (Author), Lauren O’Hara (Illustrator). I’ve always loved reading with my little girl and although now she’s getting older, I still find joy in children’s books. Our favourite at the moment is Madame Badobedah, Sophie Dahl has used wonderfully imaginative language paired with beautiful illustrations by Lauren O’Hara.
ONE Place: Staithes North Yorkshire
Our cottage in Staithes North Yorkshire is my bolt-hold. It’s the perfect sea-side retreat with its huddled cottages, winding streets and towering cliffs. Best of all, the village has become a hub for artists, and I love that galleries almost outnumber the shops. The Staithes Festival takes place in September each year when scores of cottages and public buildings transform into pop-up galleries for work by local and visiting artists. There’s a real sense of community as visiting artists stay with residents during the festival.
ONE Love: New Designers
One of my favourite days of the year is supporting New Designers. Even after 25 years working in design, I find discovering new talent and being in a position where I can encourage and develop skills incredibly rewarding. I love my team and I am fortunate to work with so many liked minded and talented people.
ONE Drink: Malbec
I do enjoy a good Malbec. Most people don’t know that I’m a member of an informal yet exclusive red wine club! My friend and I take it in turns to buy a bottle of red wine and leave it behind the bar of our local pub, ready for when either of us drop by. It’s the perfect arrangement, so even when we’re not together we can share a drink.
ONE Passion: Colour & Design
Colour and design are my passion. I’m thrilled that maximalism is on trend as it never went away for me. I’m delighted that people are becoming more confident and celebrating design, transforming bland rooms by adding personality through pattern. I’d describe myself as a collector, luckily my husband also loves going to antique fairs and our home is filled with precious treasures. I believe your home reflects your personality as ours most definitely displays our eclectic spirit.
