The Municipal Hotel Liverpool – MGallery

The Municipal Hotel, MGallery, Liverpool finally opened its doors to the public in May.  The actual building dates back to1868 and was formerly the home of Liverpool City Council until the local authority moved to the Cunard Building in 2017.  Having been Grade-II listed since 1966, the building is well known for its French and Italian architectural style, as well as its clock tower, which is visible from various points around the city.

The hotel invites all life enjoyers to experience unique stories from the past but also to write the astonishing tales of the future. Time is of essence and at the heart of The Municipal’s story. Its iconic clock tower and bells giving the tempo to a timeless melody.

Following the £40m refurbishment, the expertise of hotel furniture manufacturer’s, O’Donnell Furniture Makers, was called upon to bring a touch of modernity, with a hint of quintessential style, to the 179 guestrooms of this magnificent hotel.  The rooms range from double beds to suites, and all showcase warm and earthy colour palettes.  The hotel renovation included all guestrooms and suites, some with private courtyard gardens, and bespoke furniture all designed in collaboration with O’Donnell Furniture Makers, a family-owned business, based in West Cork and now in its fourth generation of expertise.

The interior designers drew inspiration from the hotel’s strong sense of heritage to take the design of this major refurbishment in a groundbreaking, luxurious and contemporary direction.  Integral to this approach was the creation of bespoke bedroom furniture pieces and the choice of a manufacturer who would pay attention to detail and who could deliver the required standard of high quality, crafted goods on a schedule and on budget.

The designers were tasked with the initial design concept and benchmark pieces of bespoke furniture and it was thanks to the perfect interpretation by O’Donnell Furniture Makers that finally realised these into the individual items seen in the rooms today.

The collaboration between designer and manufacturer began in the early stages of the creative process with design discussion and reviews. O’Donnell Furniture Makers input on the structural and manufacturing requirements meant that drawings were continually refined to ensure a practical solution that complemented the required design aesthetic.

During the manufacturing process, prototypes, joinery details and control samples were undertaken to ensure that the highest standards were maintained.
