“A stack of newspapers is like a brick. Together, they build the walls of our collective memory.” Beatriz González

Building Collective Memory at the Barbican Centre Art Gallery is a joyful, paper-led tribute to the extraordinary life and work of Beatriz González.

Designed by Unknown Works, the UK’s first major retrospective of the Colombian artist transforms the gallery with undulating paper landscapes, carved monolithic benches and suspended sheets that echo the materiality of print. It is bold, tactile and deeply human, reflecting González’s fearless exploration of politics, culture and collective memory.

150 works span six decades, many shown in the UK for the first time, within a sustainable exhibition design that pushes paper to its limits.
