Whittle Court Retirement Home Refurbishment

Whittle Court is a Stonewater Retirement Living scheme consisting of 40 ground, first and second floor apartments. The project was in need of a refurbishment which was undertaken by Stonewater property team, led by Glenn Loftus, with Interior Design by Diana Celella of Drawing Room Interiors.

The residents were very much involved in the refurbishment, initially being consulted on how they used the spaces, their wish list and what they felt didn’t work. Based on this brief, proposals were presented to them, including two options for Interior Design schemes, which the residents voted on, to select the colour scheme they would like to go with.

The existing communal lounge, which had a bar, was very well used by the residents for many different activities from meeting for a coffee and chat to bingo, fish and chip suppers and parties. The Lounge is now zoned into two areas, a carpeted area with easy chairs, TV and fire unit and an area with a vinyl floor and bar, comfortable tub chairs and dining height tables.

A Salon for Hair and Nails was created out of a redundant space in the reception area, creating a practical but stylish lifestyle area.

The activity room is now a multi-functional space for games, hobbies and activities.

Throughout the building it was important to connect with the local community. This was achieved through vintage photographs and maps printed onto digital wallcovering, both of which have become discussion points for the residents reminiscing.

All furniture including bespoke furniture was supplied by Barons Furniture.  There is a mix of chairs, high back, medium back and wing chairs to accommodate different resident’s needs.  An eclectic mix of furniture and fabrics was used to create a homely and welcoming non institutional interior with bright and interesting colours.

LVT flooring was used in the corridors, with a border effect to add to the interest, along with areas decorated with Newmor’s fabric backed vinyl wallcovering.  The wallcovering to each floor is different in colour to aid wayfinding along with themed artwork to each area.

Quote from Client Glenn Loftus – Strategic Partnership Manager – Stonewater

“Stonewater are very proud of our Retirement Living Schemes and believe this high standard of development achieved with consultation with our residents places our customers at the heart of everything we do.  Our feedback from the Residents is that they absolutely adore the scheme, and very proud to call this their home. We have been informed that one of the vintage photos we selected actually has one of our Residents included albeit at a much younger age.”
