A local favourite, reimagined.

Design Command has completed the refurbishment of David’s Café in Letchworth Garden City, bringing new life to a much-loved space at the heart of the community.

Blending café, bookshop, music store and retail into one cohesive environment, the redesign is centred around a simple idea, creating a place where people can slow down, stay a while and feel at ease.

Key design moves include:
• A reworked layout that seamlessly integrates seating with retail
• Warm, mid-century inspired materials and textures
• Herringbone flooring and soft upholstery to create a residential feel
• Layered lighting that gently transitions between spaces

With over 60 years of history behind it, the project is as much about preserving character as it is about improving function.

As founder Clare McDonald puts it, the aim was to create “a space that feels warm, inviting and easy to spend time in.”

A thoughtful example of how design can strengthen community spaces.

What does an award actually mean in design?

Following two 2026 iF Design Awards, we spoke with Sergio Silva of Humanscale about what recognition really says about a product… and the thinking behind it.

A few things stood out 👇

• Great design isn’t about trade-offs; ergonomics, sustainability and usability have to work together from day one
• Awards matter most when they come from rigorous, independent scrutiny
• The real measure of a product isn’t launch impact, but how it performs years down the line
• Recognition doesn’t signal arrival, it pushes the team to question, refine and do better

As Sergio puts it:
“This isn’t about creating a moment, it’s about shaping something that improves people’s lives, year after year.”

A thoughtful conversation on what sits behind truly enduring design.
