Mila Hospitality Seating: Epitomising Luxury and Comfort with Boss Design

Design Insider spoke with Boss Design during Clerkenwell Design Week about their newly launched design: Mila, a range of seating created for hospitality settings that brings luxurious comfort to the fore. Ensconced within the soft centre of Mila’s generous cushioning, the sitter is invited to rest right back, relax, and appreciate next-level comfort along with a cosy sense of security.

The Mila line includes an ample two-seater sofa, an armchair and a high-back single-seater featuring a foam-padded surround for added visual and acoustic privacy. Loose, pillow-like cushioning with a residential vibe makes the sitter feel right at home, while the extra-deep layered foam of the spacious seat section maximises softness and comfort. Aaron Clarkson, Lead Designer, Boss Design. says:

“Mila’s serene, luxurious character will perfectly complement the softness of a bijou setting, but I think architects and interior designers will also have fun specifying this range across wider landscapes. Units can be positioned side-by-side and back-to-back with no head clash, and you’ll be able to create an interesting topography by mixing high- and low-back seats and sofas.”

A Winning Pedigree

Mila’s creation didn’t follow a typical design process. The original idea came during the development of our award-winning Frida work and lounge booth. Mila has the same plywood surround as Frida, but instead of a sling seat with space underneath, Mila’s solid-looking, grounded base reaches down to the floor.

Like our successful Beau modular sofa system, Mila’s seat consists of layer upon layer of cut foam, forming a dome over a new serpentine spring configuration within a plywood frame for unprecedented comfort. A thin, foam-padded plywood surround forms a protective shell around the soft centre of the seat, with loose cushions inspired by our popular Bodie sofa creating a neat segue between the seat and back sections. Aaron Clarkson says:

“Combining Frida’s back, Beau’s seat and Bodie’s cushions was almost like baking a cake – putting together three special ingredients to create something with its own delicious flavour. It wasn’t a traditional product development process; it came about through recognising the strengths of each element and exploring how we could capitalise on them.”

Lasting Appeal

While Mila has a structured, architectural look and feel, its softness and curves resonate beautifully with the organic lines of other seating in the Boss catalogue such as Remi and Amelia. Interesting juxtapositions occur within the design itself, with the defined form of the seat transitioning to the homely, undefined shapes of the cushions which transition again to the defined form of the protective surround.

Carefully refined through an iterative design process, Mila’s final form has timeless appeal, which is matched in its build quality. The range is manufactured for longevity and sustainability using just four principal materials – plywood, foam, fibre and steel. With no permanent connections, units can be reupholstered and refurbished to extend its lifecycle, and its materials are easily separated thereafter for end-of-life recycling. Aaron Clarkson says:

“Mila has an individual look which is new and different, combined with a level of comfort ideal for hospitality settings. It will look great specified in a single fabric to create a sense of unity, but it’s also going to look fantastic with the surround upholstered in leather and the inner sections covered in textiles. The different pattern and colour combinations we offer lead to near-infinite possibilities.”
