Harrison Spinks commissioned to develop mattresses for hotel group

Herdwick wool is naturally more springy and supportive than other wool

Award-winning bed and mattress manufacturer, Harrison Spinks, has been commissioned to produce a range of bespoke Herdwick wool beds for three Cumbria-based hotels owned by Wildsmith Hotels.

The hotelier, which is currently in its 10th year of business, has turned to Yorkshire-based Harrison Spinks to supply mattresses for the 56 bedrooms in Hipping Hall, The Ryebeck, and the soon-to-be-opened Forest Side, using wool from Herdwick sheep – an animal synonymous with the surrounding Lake District region.

Herdwick wool is naturally more springy and supportive than other wool, with anti-microbial, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal qualities, making it ideal for asthma or allergy sufferers. The pure wool is acknowledged as the original and best of fibres, which is more sustainable, recyclable and biodegradable.

Owner of Wildsmith Hotels, Andrew Wildsmith, said: “As a hotelier, I am keen to champion British wool. I believe in supporting this local, iconic breed, and in turn, the craftspeople who turn this unique product into something practical, comfortable and totally sustainable.

“Farming locally reduces carbon usage and wool is fully recyclable at the end of a product’s life, a factor which is extremely important in the hospitality industry given we regularly need to replace beds and other soft furnishings. If we can use natural materials as much as possible, we will be supporting both our local economy and helping to maintain our beautiful landscape.”

Harrison Spinks has been awarded two Queen’s Awards for Enterprise in Innovation and Sustainable Development for its unique spring technology and for growing natural fillings on its 300-acre farm, which are used throughout its product range. It sells its luxurious beds and mattresses under Harrison, Somnus and Spink & Edgar brands, as well as manufacturing own label mattresses for some of the UK’s major high street department stores.

Steve Truswell, Contracts and Nursery Sales Director at Harrison Spinks, said: “As a leader in developing luxury high-end bespoke beds for both consumers and the leisure industry, we’re pleased to be working with Wildsmith Hotels to deliver yet another luxury and sustainable product.

“We firmly believe a good night’s sleep is a precious commodity, supporting health and wellbeing, which is an important factor in creating the ultimate hotel experience.”
