Transforming Mulberry Court to a Boutique Country Style Care Home

Mulberry Court is an all-inclusive 24-bedroom Residential Care home in Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire.  The home was in need of refurbishment and the owners,  The Freemantle Trust, wanted to create the look and feel of a Boutique Country Style Care Home.

Diana Celella of The Drawing Room Interiors was appointed as the Interior Designer. Specialising in Commercial Interiors, design including Retirement Living and Care Homes, Diana has worked in this sector of interior design since 1987 and as such has gained a reputation as a well-recognised and extremely Knowledgeable Healthcare Designer. Her approach to each project is always tailored to the needs of the operator. Diana presented two completely different colour schemes for each area to the residents, staff and relatives.  They voted on which ones they preferred to ensure they all felt part of the project.

The inadequate Reception area was reconfigured, and a welcoming Bespoke Coffee bar and seating area was designed to fit the area and the required style.

All areas were redecorated and teamed with especially designed bespoke fabrics.  For the coffee area a fabric was designed incorporating mulberries to work with the name of the project.  Gentle natural country colours were chosen, teamed with a modern version of Arts and Crafts style throughout, creating a warm, light and inviting interior.

In the Lounge/Dining rooms more usable space was created by reconfiguring the area.  The fabric chosen here was based on Lemons to add a sunshine feel to the room, with a bespoke TV unit to give a focal point. To give residents an alternative place to sit a former bedroom was converted into a quiet lounge.

To create a cosy reading area, a corridor with a wide section and a large column was cleverly reconfigured with a room divider designed with banquette seating to incorporate the column.

The Hair and Nail Salon was completely redesigned with beautiful bespoke furniture and a relaxing colour scheme.

Diana needed to select a furniture company with a quality product to help create the Boutique feel, but also with Bespoke cabinetry capabilities, so BCFA member Shackleton’s Furniture was chosen. The fit out went well which was especially important as this refurbishment took place over the COVID 19 Lockdown.

Sara Livadeas CEO of The Fremantle Trust said:

“The space at Mulberry Court has been transformed from a dark and cramped to place a light, modern and welcoming environment. All the changes have been designed with residents in mind. A stylish place has been created where anyone would want to spend their time. Diana’s warm and engaging style is second to none and she has a way of explaining her ideas so that everyone, including people living with dementia, can participate in making choices. Her no nonsense approach ensures that she delivers on her designs. We are proud to include Mulberry Court in our portfolio.”
