Camira’s Ocean-waste fabric at Deutsche Bahn’s headquarters

Camira Fabrics have exciting news to share – Oceanic – Camira’s first textile to include marine plastic waste – has been chosen by Europe’s largest railway operator, Deutsche Bahn, for inclusion in its brand-new, eco-friendly office suites.

Based in Cube Berlin, Deutsche Bahn’s new home has been heralded as Europe’s smartest office thanks to its state-of-the-art technology and pioneering energy efficient systems. With a commitment to using 100% renewable power for all of its rail journeys by 2038, Deutsche Bahn is leading the public transport industry’s move towards a green future – and has designed every element of its new office suites in line with this vision.

Focusing on upcycling, the company has given a new lease of life to over 700 items of office furniture by transforming old products into new pieces through local carpentry services and upholstery workshops. Selecting carpets woven from recycled materials, and choosing Oceanic for the fabric used across its seating, each element of the interior has been carefully considered to ensure the impact upon the environment is as minimal as it can possibly be.

Part of the SEAQUAL Initiative to combat marine plastic pollution and achieve a waste-free environment, Oceanic was launched by Camira in February 2020 and has since been featured by Dezeen, Design Milk, and announced as the winner in the ‘Green Materials’ category in the HiP awards held by North America’s prestigious Interior Design magazine. Created entirely from post-consumer recycled plastic, each metre of fabric contains the equivalent of 26 plastic bottles. Lynn Kingdon, Head of Creative Design at Camira, comments on the inclusion of Oceanic within Deutsche Bahn’s new suites:

“We’re delighted to be featured in the space; zero waste design is something we are incredibly passionate about, so to be included within an interior which is based entirely around the initiative is a great compliment.”

Not only is the sustainable space visually striking, but it was also a cost-effective approach – with the total investment in Deutsche Bahn’s green office 50% below the cost of conventional office equipment.
