R&S Robertson – Hilton Glasgow

Hilton Glasgow Grosvenor is situated in the heart of Glasgow’s west end and is a stones through away from some of Glasgow’s major attractions. This legendary hotel joined the Hilton Portfolio in 2000.

After having previously worked with leading interior designer Cunningham Mclean on a major bedroom refurbishment at the hotel R&S Robertson were asked by the designer to create a truly bespoke fitting for the lower lobby area. The major challenge was the 6m high ceiling and the need for easy access for maintenance.  In order to achieve this we manufactured a 4100mm x 8000mm rectangular MDF feature ceiling pendant which has 330 x 127mm clear glass balls which are lit individually by end lit fibre optic. This was interspersed with 175 x 40mm crystal balls which are highlighted by recessed fibre optic downlighters to create an element of sparkle. The light sources were housed in the roof space to allow easy access for maintenance.

Alan McClure, Partner at Cunningham Mclean comments on the project below;

‘Our client brief was to create a refined light sculpture that would become a focal point visible form all areas of the hotel reception and lobby of the hotel. Challenges included the location for the feature within a large stair well that is visible from the ground and first floor, covering a height of over 6m. Consideration also had to be given to the maintenance and running cost of such a large light fitting that was 4m long and 4m high.

Working with R&S Robertson, the solution was to use fibre optic technology, having only 2 light sources providing several hundred points of light on clear sheathed glass end lit fibres strands, each one having a glass globe. To enhance the overall lighting effect, cut glass crystals were suspended between the globes.

The final result was a bespoke, sophisticated and elegant chandelier that has become the central feature to the public areas, and a talking point for guests visiting the hotel.’
